This is the experimental studio space of Mike Winkelmann, who goes by the artist name Beeple; a Charleston resident who just so happens to be one of the highest-paid living artists in the world.

In many ways, Winkelmann comes across to an outsider much like his studio — completely unassuming. He’s a buttoned-up, slightly nerdy 43-year-old Daniel Island dad who moved here in 2017 from Wisconsin.

Except, back in 2021, his life changed completely when his digital artwork Everydays: the First 5,000 Days sold in the form of a non-fungible token (NFT) for $69.3 million at a Christie’s auction, shattering records and catapulting the future of NFTs.

For background, an NFT is a completely digital, unique token that is transferred using blockchain technology, much like cryptocurrency. In the age of investing in digital assets like Bitcoin, NFTs are a growing sector of the economy.

Winkelmann himself recognizes the absurdity of it all, and even references it in much of his art. Although a graphic designer at his core, much of Winkelmann’s modern work is rooted in societal and political commentary.

His 18-year-long ongoing project, Everydays, is his way of documenting both his own life and the world around him, as he creates one piece of digital art a day, start to finish — even on days when his kids were born or on his wedding day.

While his art has been bought, traded and displayed all over the world, he and his family have continued to lay their roots in Charleston. His decision to build his studio here, rather than in a bigger city, only solidified that.

“When all the NFT stuff blew up, honestly, it was just sort of natural to stay here. We didn’t ever consider moving,” said Winkelmann.

Though in an odd location, his studio space serves mostly as his personal workspace, as well as an experiential way to bridge the gap between digital art and physical art.

“I think when people primarily view digital art on their phone, it can be very hard to have a sort of visceral, kind of emotional reaction to it,” said Winkelmann. “Having a physical space to be able to show art in a more, sort of communal way and a more impactful way was really important.”

While the studio doesn’t currently operate as a public museum you can visit anytime, the Beeple team frequently puts on ticketed events where they bring together people from all over the world to celebrate all things weird, technological, and artistic.

Some of these events even feature local artists’ work or live painting, which Winkelmann sees as a celebration of traditional and nontraditional art living side by side.

“I think there’s really an opportunity to mix these worlds,” said Winkelmann. “Art is art, and I think there’s ways even in a space like this that feels very digital, to highlight traditional art.”

While his graphic — and at times grotesque — art may not be for everybody, there is certainly something for everybody at a Beeple Studio event. The space itself boasts 50,000 square feet, including both an experiential space as well as a traditional white-walled gallery with physical art installations.

In the experiential space, the team hosts everything from community talks on the future of AI, to a SCAD student showcase, to a world-class culinary tasting event. Winkelmann truly hopes to push the boundaries of what an art studio can be.

“What I want to do is focus more on events where it’s like, if I press this button we’re all seeing the exact same thing at the same time and having more of a communal experience,” added Winkelmann. “The ultimate goal is just to be able to continue to experiment on new use-cases for a digital space like this.”
