Patience has paid off for Reidville developer Bill Cureton.
Years ago and knowing that the 71-year-old, deteriorating Reidville Elementary School on College Street near Reidville Road would someday be vacated when Spartanburg School District 5 built a new school, he bought 55 acres adjacent to the school.
About two years ago, he then proposed making a deal with the town council to build a town center, complete with a park, walking paths, amphitheater with stage, retail shops and restaurants on 12 acres at the old school site.
He said, and many residents agreed, that the small town west of Spartanburg could do more to capitalize on all the growth and housing developments springing up.
But he met resistance from many other longtime residents who wanted the small-town charm to stay the same.
“We don’t want to be another mini-Greenville,” one flyer mailed to residents said.
Complicating matters was how School District 5 trustees wanted to dispose of the old school.
The Town Council favored Cureton's town center plan. But Bob Jones University Education Group offered to buy the old school and place a K-4 Christian school in the building.
Finally, District 5 Trustees decided to transfer the old school to the Town of Reidville in exchange for land the town claimed to own where the district’s new Reidville Elementary was being built.
With ownership in hand, Reidville Town Council signed an agreement with Cureton to let him build his town center, and keep a portion of the old school to be used for a new town hall.
“We’re excited,” Cureton said. “There’s so much growth in the area. Within three miles of here, there’s 1,800 new homes coming. It’s going to be a great opportunity to build a community around this town center.”
The new elementary school opened on the eastern end of Reidville in August.
A groundbreaking ceremony for the $15 million Reidville Town Center project will be held rain or shine at 2 p.m. Sunday at the site of the old school. Town Clerk Christine McKaba said there will be bluegrass music and barbecue plates.
If it rains, the ceremony will be moved into the cafeteria area of the old school, she said.
Cureton said razing of the most deteriorating part of the school will begin within a few weeks.
“We hope to be working in earnest by early next year, working to upfit the existing part of the school (the library and cafeteria areas in the section to be saved) so the town can start moving in.”
Site grading and placement of utilities will begin by next March, and by the end of next summer, streets should be in place.
The entire project should be finished by the spring of 2021.
